Basset Hound Dog
Origins
Although Basset Hound dogs have existed
for many centuries, being even mentioned by Shakespeare, they did
not become famous until after middles of the 19th century, when they
were first presented at the Paris Dog Show. The name of this breed,
Basset Hound, is believed to be based on the French term "bas”,
which can be translated as "low" and would refer to their
height.
Physical characteristics
Basset Hounds are characterized by
having a big body and short legs. Their weight usually ranges between
55 and 75 pounds or 23 and 38 kilograms. Male Basset Hounds usually
have a height of between 12 and 15 inches or between 30 and 38 centimeters,
while female Basset Hounds have a height that ranges between 11 and
14 inches or 28 and 36 centimeters.
Temperament
Basset Hounds are usually very loyal,
kind, sweet, and peaceful dogs. They are a good choice for a family
pet, since they usually are well-behaved and good with children. Despite
of this, when they first arrive to their new home, it might take some
time for them to adapt and to be trained, since sometimes they tend
to be stubborn.
Bassets love following scents and
smells, and sometimes this can lead them into trouble. When Bassets
find an interesting smell, they might follow it forgetting everything
around them and without caring where they go, so it is important to
keep an eye on them if they go to an open area. This breed is good
for living in an apartment, but in this case, and as it happens with
most other breeds, will need regular exercise.
